Sensory play
Before a toddler can tell you what something is, they need to find out what it does. Squishy, loud, cold, rough, rattly. That's not a phase to get through — it's the whole filing system going in.
It's also the fastest way to buy twenty quiet minutes, which is the real reason most parents end up here.
What to look for
- More than one texture on the same toy — smooth and bumpy in one hand
- Something that makes a sound because of what the child did, not on a timer
- Water, sand, dough, beads — messy, and worth it
- Nothing that needs batteries to be interesting
Speech & language
Talking starts long before words do. Pointing, copying faces, banging two things together and looking at you to see if you noticed — that's the conversation warming up.
The toys that help are the boring-looking ones: things you can name, hand over, ask for back, and name again. A toy that talks for the child fills the silence the child was about to fill.
What to look for
- Things you can name out loud twenty times without losing your mind
- Turn-taking built in — rolling, posting, passing
- Pretend play sets: kitchens, doctors, phones, tea
- Books with flaps, because a flap is a question
When to actually worry
Every child runs on their own clock, and a late talker is usually just a late talker. But if a child isn't babbling by around 12 months, isn't using single words by around 18, or has lost words they already had — that's a conversation to have with your paediatrician, not with a toy shop. Toys help. They don't diagnose, and neither do we.
Fine motor
Fine motor is the small stuff — the pincer grip that will one day hold a pencil, a spoon, a shoelace. It gets built by fiddling. Endlessly. With things that are just annoying enough to be interesting.
This is the skill parents notice last and schools notice first.
What to look for
- Threading, stacking, posting, screwing, peeling
- Pieces small enough to need two fingers, big enough to be safe for the age on the box
- Puzzles with knobs before puzzles without
- Crayons, dough, stickers — cheap and relentless
Focus & calm
Attention span isn't something a child has or doesn't have. It's something a toy either earns or interrupts. A toy that flashes every four seconds is training the opposite of what you want.
The toys in this group tend to be quiet, open-ended, and slower than the ones on the front shelf. They also tend to be the ones still being played with in March.
What to look for
- One task, done properly — sorting, matching, balancing
- No sound, or sound the child controls
- Something with a visible finish line, so there's a reason to stay
- Wooden or weighted — heavier things slow hands down
Gross motor
Big muscles, big movement — pulling up, walking, climbing, throwing, pedalling. It's the loudest category in the shop and the one that most reliably produces a child who sleeps.
Indoor space in a Lahore flat is a real constraint, so this group is split between things that need a lawn and things that genuinely don't.
What to look for
- Push-and-pull toys for anyone newly upright
- Ride-ons sized so both feet touch the floor flat
- Balls, beanbags, anything that survives a wall
- Balance boards and steps for the climbers you can't stop
When to actually worry
Sitting, crawling and walking arrive across a wide window and most of that spread is completely normal. If a child isn't sitting unsupported by around 9 months or isn't walking by around 18, ask your paediatrician. Toys support movement; they don't fix a delay.
